MEET YOUR HOSTS:

Chong See Ming, her husband Sim, and her son Max (16), are an unschooling family based in Kuala Lumpur. Amongst her family's many varied interests are rock climbing, music, art, gardens, flea markets, natural history, and stand-up comedy. Her family has been to the Merida Pop-Up & both the Guanajuato Pop-Ups in 2022, plus Penang, Normandy, and Seoul Pop-Ups in 2023!

Rachel & family sold everything in 2014 and never have looked back. They've been completely nomadic since 2018, homeschooling their three children while they travel the globe. Some of their favorite family travel destinations include Turkey, Romania, New Zealand, Spain, and London. Two of their three teens will join the Kuala Lumpur Pop-Up and will be 14 and 16 years old at the time. This will be their first trip to Malaysia and they're super excited to reunite with See Ming & family (our 6th pop-up together!).

LODGING & NEIGHBORHOODS:

Many of our activities will take place in Kuala Lumpur City Centre / Chinatown areas, most will be between Perdana Botanical Gardens in the west and Petronas Towers in the east. There are a few options for convenient areas for accommodation:

  • Bukit Bintang is a popular, central area to stay. Lots of restaurants, shops, malls, nightlife, and food stalls. Evenings and weekends can be busy & noisy.
  • Kuala Lumpur City Center, or KLCC for short, is next to Bukit Bintang, where you find the famous and spectacular Petronas Towers, the world’s tallest twin towers.
  • KL Sentral area is convenient to stay in as it is home to KL Sentral Train Station and the city’s many forms of transportation including the MRT lines, LRT trains, monorail, and the airport Klia Express train. You can easily access any part of the city or surrounding area.
  • Chinatown & Merdeka Square is the home to many renovations. Broad streets, walking areas, and murals make this an inviting area. Many of the formerly, worn-down shophouses have been renovated into beautiful, trendy cafes, bakeries, restaurants, bars, bookstores, art galleries, and coffee shops. NOTE: There are some not-so-nice hostels in this area aimed at budget backpackers, read reviews if you stay at a low budget option.
  • Bangsar South has recently become a center for trendy restaurants, cafes and shops. The two LRT rail stations (Universiti & Kenrinchi) make this a great base. The trip to KL Sentral station takes roughly 10 minutes. NOTE: This is a bit further out of the main area and there are not any sights nearby. You'll need to train, taxi, or Grab to the city center.

One co-host family will be staying in the Robertson Residences in the Bukit Bintang area (there are additional rental units available in this complex), the other host in Desa Park City.

TRANSPORT CONSIDERATIONS:

Kuala Lumpur has MRT lines, LRT lines, a monorail, taxis, and Grab (the Asian version of Uber).
