MEET YOUR HOST:

We're the Shepston Overlys; full-time we're made up of four humans and a dog; part-time we have some very adorable foster kittens. The humans in the family are Megan, Tim, Simon, age 13, and Millie, age 9. We are new residents of Portugal, currently based in Cascais, and working on the somewhat challenging language.

We started traveling in 2021. For the moment, we are enjoying Europe and the United States, and in the next couple of years we hope to be able to travel to Asia and New Zealand.

We are excited to welcome your family to the Lisbon area, as we (at least the adults in our family) love Portugal. We find it relaxing and calm--everything moves slower here than in the United States--while also engaging. The Lisbon area has interesting museums, beautiful parks, breathtaking beaches and cliff-side hikes, rich history, and so many wonderful people.

LODGING & NEIGHBORHOODS:

Most activities are based in Lisbon, but we will take three to four day trips to surrounding towns. I would recommend staying between Lisbon and Cascais. Some great family areas just outside of Lisbon are Cascais, Estoril, Parede, and Paco d'Arcos. In Lisbon proper, Campo d'Ourique and Restelo are popular and safe neighborhoods. The host family will be staying in Cascais, about a fifteen minute walk northwest of the train station and just north of Parque Marechal Carmona.

The area out on the coast, called Colares, is difficult to get around without a car. I also would not recommend staying in Sintra, as it can be overwhelmed with tourists.

TRANSPORT CONSIDERATIONS:

The Lisbon area is well-connected by public transport. There is a train line from Cascais into Lisbon that stops in Estoril, Parede, and Paco d'Arcos. There are buses running all throughout the area, and in Lisbon proper there is a metro line as well. To purchase tickets, you can either use one of the machines or walk up to the counter. We like to load money onto what is called a "zapping" card, zapping can be used on train, metro or bus. Rides on the train, lift, metro, bus or tram cost between 1-2€ each, usually around 1,50€.
