MEET YOUR HOST:

We are a family of five. Laitia is from Fiji and Amanda is from Wisconsin, USA. Laitia and Amanda met while living and working in Kuwait. Our children are ages 10, 9, and 6. We spend most of our time in Wisconsin with Amanda's family, helping run the family septic business. We travel to Fiji as often as we can and lived there for about a year when our oldest children were toddlers. We haven't made the move to full time worldschooling but travel as often as possible. Thus far our travels with the kids have mainly centered around the USA, the Caribbean, and Fiji.

Amanda is a former teacher who left the classroom about five years ago to homeschool the children and in hopes of having more flexibility to travel. We are excited to share Laitia's home with you and connect with other like-minded families!

LODGING & NEIGHBORHOODS:

Suva City is located on a penninsula that extends out from the Southeastern coast of Viti Levu, the big island in Fiji. Suva is accessed by flying into Nadi International Airport. From Nadi there are many options to get to Suva with a scenic 3.5-4 hour drive including taxis, mini buses, coach buses, private transfers, shared transfers, or rental car. It is also possible to fly from Nadi to Nausori Airport. From Nausori the drive into Suva is approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Suva is a relatively small city. Many of our activities will be within walking distance of Suva City Center, several activities are planned around the Albert Park vicinity. There will be a couple of days that either a taxi or rental car will be required to access our locations, but most days walking and the bus system are sufficient. There are many places to eat all around Suva and the surrounding area.

The host family will be staying in Kinoya with their local family. Kinoya lies northeast of Suva City. This is not an area with much lodging, though it may be possible to find an Airbnb or similar in nearby Laucala Beach where International School Suva is housed. Neither Kinoya nor Laucala Beach will be nearly as convenient as Suva City Center for accessing our activities.

Participants should exercise caution and awareness as they would in any large city. Poverty is high in Fiji and there is a large homeless population in Suva. The seaside should be avoided at night as well as clubs and poorly lit streets. Pickpocketing is somewhat of an issue in Suva City.

TRANSPORT CONSIDERATIONS:

Public transport is abundant in the Suva area. There is a large taxi network as well as an established bus system. Taxis are metered so be sure your driver is using the meter unless you have made a prior agreement with the driver. If you have transport questions, please ask in the Facebook group below, we're happy to help!
